Bacteria in the Drain

A tub or shower drain is the best place for bacteria to grow. Over time, debris can build up in a bathroom drain and harbor bacteria. The bacteria eventually lead to mold and mildew development. To get rid of the smell, you can pour bleach into the drain and around the stopper. Allow the bleach to sit, then follow with some hot water.

Especially as you really get into plunging and start applying force, you may unintentionally start holding the plunger at an angle. This breaks the seal between the plunger head and the drain. Focus on holding the plunger with the handle straight up and down as you work. It helps if you hold the handle a little further up and really lean your body over the drain as you plunge.

Failing to Maintain the Seal

In addition to holding the plunger at an angle, there are a few other mistakes that may cause you to break the seal as you plunge.

Many homeowners break the seal when they grow fatigued from plunging. To avoid this problem, start off with a gentle plunges, and then slowly increase the force. Plunge for only 20 seconds at a time, and then pull the plunger away. If the drain is still clogged, take a break to regain your stamina, and plunge again for 20 seconds.

You may also break the seal if you pull back too far as you plunge. You only need to move your hands a few inches to force water in and out of the drain without lifting the plunger head off the drain. Focus on making small, controlled movements.

If you're noticing slower drain performance than usual, or if there's an actual backflow or even a flooding event happening in your home right now, you're certainly right to be concerned. Sewer backflow can cause expensive damage to your home, and slow drains can indicate a plumbing problem that will require professional repair. So here, in no particular order, are four potential culprits of draining problems.

1. Vents That Are Blocked

If your drains operate slowly and seem to be affecting each other — for example, if your bathtub makes strange sounds when you flush the toilet — this could simply indicate that you have plumbing vents in need of care. Although the symptoms of this problem are similar to the symptoms of a sewer clog — you may even notice sewer-like smells — you can have a plumber help you figure out where the real problem lies.

2. Septic or Sewer Backup or Overflow

If you've had a ton of rain recently, all that water could be overwhelming either the septic system or, if you're in the city, the sewer storm drains. The sheer amount of rainwater that the system is dealing with can make it more difficult for your sewer or septic system to accept the water you're trying to send down your drains.
In this situation, the solution may simply be to wait until the excess storm water has had a chance to drain away before using your drains. This will mean reducing the amount of water you use and, if possible, putting off large water usages such as taking a bath until conditions have improved.

3. Drain Blockage

While it's possible that your problem actually involves multiple clogged drains, unless you've been dumping solids — such as coffee grounds, cotton swabs or cooking grease — down every drain in your house equally, or unless you have a mainline blockage, if the problems lies in a blocked drain, you'll probably only have one or two drains that are performing slowly.

The kitchen drains can easily become blocked, especially if you use a garbage disposal and dump cooking grease down your drains (it's a better idea to dispose of grease in the trash, avoiding plumbing problems).
The symptoms of drain blockages, though often more localized, are similar to those mentioned above. The drains will operate slowly and may appear to affect each other, and you may also notice odd — and highly unpleasant — smells. You may even hear bubbling or gurgling sounds.

4. Clogged Sewer or Septic Line

If you have slow drains throughout your house that don't seem to be caused by vent problems or by flooding, a clog in the line that leads to the sewer or septic system is likely to be the problem. If you have a septic system, you'll need to consider the fact that it could be a symptom of a larger septic problem, too.

To prevent a clogged line, you should focus on regular cleaning, avoid putting solids — even "flushable" wipes — or grease down the drains, and check to make sure there are no trees near your sewer line.

Each tree should be kept, at minimum, at a distance equal to its mature height, and those with especially damaging roots — such as willow trees, whose roots seek out water with extreme efficiency — need to be at least a hundred feet away from septic or sewer components.

A water heater is one of the most heavily used appliances in a home. Not only must it meet your hot water needs in the kitchen and the bathroom, but it also has to supply appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines. The constant demands being placed on a water heater can thus cause it to experience all sorts of troublesome problems.
A surprising number of water heater ailments stem from the component known as the anode rod. If you would like to learn more about the anode rod, as well how to recognize the signs that your anode rod may be experiencing problems, read on. Internal Corrosion
Without a doubt, the single greatest enemy of a water heater is corrosion. This of course is a direct result of the fact that the inside of a water heater is exposed on a continuous basis for years and years on end. As a result of this constant exposure, the steel walls of the tank are put at a huge risk of oxidation. This chemical process strips the steel of its electrons, thus allowing so-called hydroxide ions to form.

Here is where the anode rod enters the picture. The anode rod's purpose is simple: to present such an appealing target for corrosion that the walls of the tank are left unscathed. In other words, the anode rod is gradually destroyed in place of the tank itself. For this reason, anode rods also frequently go by the name of sacrificial rods.
Over time, corrosive elements inside of the tank will chew down the anode rod further and further, until eventually it will have all but disappeared. At this point, unless you have a fresh anode rod installed, the corrosion will then begin to attack the walls of the tank. For this reason, it is vital that you have your anode rod inspected and serviced on a regular basis.
The typical anode rod can be expected to protect your water heater from corrosion for four to five years before it will have virtually disappeared. The precise length of service is difficult to pin down beyond this general span. That's because the rate of wear will also depend on factors such as the construction of the particular anode rod, the hardness of your water supply, and the amount of use the tank gets.

Recognizing The Problem
One of the tricky things about anode rods is that it is not always easy to tell when they have reached the end of their lifespan. That said, there is one strong sign you should be aware of: rust in your water. If you have noticed tiny bits of rust in your hot water, there is a good chance that the problem is tied to corrosion inside of your water tank. Be sure to contact a reputable plumbing company as soon as possible to come and inspect your anode rod.

Rod Inspection
To determine the state of your anode rod, an experienced plumber must physically remove it from the tank. This requires cutting off the power supply, allowing the tank to completely cool, and the using a wrench to unscrew the nut at the top of the tank that holds the anode rod in place.
